A free post-natal check-up is offered for babies and mothers, lasting 30 minutes. If a problem is found, babies are typically seen between four and six times.
Moulding that does not release can show as sticky eyes, poor latching, irritability, or babies wanting to be held all the time.
A baby's head is made up of 22 bones which overlap and mould to allow it to adapt to the forces of labour. If this moulding does not release, symptoms such as sticky eyes, poor latching, irritability or wanting to be held constantly can result.
Further moulding, spinal compression and nerve irritation can occur if a baby does not descend through the birth canal and needs forceps or Ventouse, which can cause colic, reflux, flat head (plagiocephaly), torticollis or feeding difficulties.
Caesarean-born babies tend to be more mucusy than those born vaginally, as they had no compression through the chest, which can lead to ongoing ear, nose and throat infections.
